My name is Shawna Armstrong and I’m a multidisciplinary graphic designer located in Atlanta, GA. These days I focus on designing websites and branding for small businesses with the good people at Thrive.

My Inspiration

Science fiction (in all forms) is the main inspiration and drive for most of my work. I fell in love with sci-fi in college which led me to get a second degree in English Literature and eventually take that passion to the community running some space themed Meetup groups. What draws me to sci-fi, specifically Golden Age work, is the ability to explore how humans interact to extreme circumstances (without the actual risk). In my design, this has translated to exploring empathy, diversity, inclusion, and questioning the accepted.

Unique Experiences
Perhaps driven by the adventurers in my beloved sci-fi, I’m not one to stay still or settle for something easy. I’ve worked over a dozen jobs, lived in three states (and two vans), and explored different lifestyles. Those unique experiences have made me a better designer and better member of my community. I take pride in being able to balance budgets and deadlines, while being sensitive to the experiences of both my team and our users.

Always Learning
Traditionally trained in print and identity, I quickly learned to adapt to whatever came across my desk. First I learned web design, then email marketing, followed by social media management, and then exhibition design. Every new project meant learning a new program, application, platform, or audience. Over the years I stopped getting nervous of the unknown and learned to get excited about the opportunities. These days I make a point to read and experiment with new trends and techniques on a weekly basis.

What’s Next?
UX and UI. While I design websites practically every day, currently the sites are for smaller businesses, with smaller budgets and simple functionality. I’m looking forward to working with some larger clients with a more robust audience and resources. Also, planning a road trip along the Northeast coast, any suggestions on vegetarian eateries?
